Description

A tender, smoky, and tangy slow-cooked American classic using bone-in chicken thighs and barbecue sauce. Perfect for effortless weeknight meals or versatile protein for sandwiches and tacos.

Ingredients

1.5 lbs (6-8 pieces) bone-in chicken thighs
12 oz BBQ sauce (store-bought or homemade)
1 cup sliced yellow onion
1 tsp garlic granules
½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
1 tsp salt
1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1 brewed black tea bag (optional, for smokiness)

Instructions

Pat chicken thighs dry and rub with salt, pepper, garlic granules, and cayenne
Layer sliced onion on the bottom of a crockpot, pour BBQ sauce over it, then place chicken on top
Cover and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours or HIGH for 3-4 hours
Skim fat from the cooking liquid, then simmer sauce in a saucepan for 15 minutes to thicken
Optional: Sauté chicken chunks in a cast iron skillet with BBQ sauce for 1-2 minutes to brown

Notes

Bone-in thighs yield richer flavor and juicier meat
A brewed black tea bag adds subtle smokiness; use decaf or herbal tea if desired
Wait 20 minutes after cooking to shred for easier handling and less fat accumulation
