Description

A tangy, savory meat sandwich packed with tender ground beef (or plant-based alternative), caramelized onions, sweet tomatoes, and bold spices in soft white bread. A messy, flavorful handheld dish perfect for weeknights or creativity.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80% lean), or plant-based alternative
1 (15 oz) can diced tomatoes (no salt added)
1 cup diced yellow onion
1 cup chopped green bell pepper
2 tbsp yellow mustard
1 tbsp white sugar
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tbsp non-alcoholic Worcestershire sauce
Soft white bread, split buns, or sliced Wonder Bread

Instructions

Heat skillet over medium-high until hot. Add beef, spreading evenly. Brown without stirring for 3-5 minutes. Break into pieces, cook 10 minutes until golden. Remove excess fat, leaving 1 tbsp.
Add onions and peppers. Sauté 5 minutes until tender. Scrape browned bits from pan.
Stir in tomatoes, mustard, sugar, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. simmer 5 minutes until thickened.
Serve meat mixture on warm bread or buns. Top with napkins for messiness.

Notes

Swap ground beef for TVP, lentils, or mushrooms for vegetarian/vegan versions
Add canned black beans or chipotle peppers for extra texture/heat
Use sodium-free tomatoes to reduce salt content
Caramelized onions deepen sweetness; avoid undercooking meat for richer flavor
